East Camb. & Inman Square Biz. Associations Merge
Lots of exciting news for our neighborhood this week. The East Cambridge Business Association has merged with the Inman Square Business Association.
In the eight years since the ECBA was founded, its membership has increased to 90 businesses from five as it worked to make Cambridge Street “a better place to do business.”
The East Cambridge Business Association will now represent business owners from Lechmere Square to Inman Square. Inman Square will be among the commercial areas represented by ECBA which already include First Street, Binney Street, Hampshire Street, and One Kendall Square in the Wellington Harrington Neighborhood.
“At one end of Cambridge Street we will be focusing on integrating a successful Northpoint development into the small business fabric of the street and at the other end we will be reinforcing Inman Square as one of Cambridge’s great destinations,” Patrick Magee, ECBA president and owner of Atwood’s Tavern, said.
As the two groups merged Eater Boston has named two Inman Square restaurants Moona and the recently reopened East Coast Grill as the two “hottest restaurants in Boston.” Check out a glowing review of Moona, an eastern Mediterranean restaurant which tops Eater Boston’s list, here in the Boston Globe.
At the same time as the merger of the two groups, Michael Grill, the owner of Geek Offices has been appointed to the board of the East Cambridge Business Association. Geek Offices has been a sponsor of ECBA’s RibFest for the last 4 years. Geek Offices and 1035 Cambridge Street used to be on the far boundary of the ECBA. Now it’s pleased to be in the middle of the growing business association.

Boston Globe Magazine Cover Story by Deborah Halber
Congrats to Geek Office’s member Deborah Halber on her cover story in last week’s Boston Globe Magazine. Deborah’s story “It’s Time for Vocational Schools to Get Some Respect” looks at the long wait lists and out-of-date facilities of the state’s “voke” schools and profiles several promising students.
Deborah puts the story in a national perspective, writing “the United States ‘pushed the blue-collar training agenda into an educational corner and virtually assured that anyone who ventured there would be tarred by stigma,’ UMass’s Newman and coauthor Hella Winston argue in their new book, Reskilling America: Learning to Labor in the Twenty-First Century.”
Deborah is a member of Writing Lab, a group of freelance and staff writers at GeekOffices coworking space in Cambridge whose alums include Boston Globe Magazine editor Michael Fitzgerald, who edited Halber’s piece.
