MuckRock is a “non-profit, collaborative news site that brings together journalists, researchers, activists, and regular citizens to request, analyze, and share government documents, making politics more transparent and democracies more informed.”

The group has has helped reporters and others file more than 10,000 public records requests to government agencies in the past year alone and has released over half a million pages of records. An early Q&A with MuckRock co-founder Michael Morisy can be found here, though our favorite is the group’s FOIA redaction Hall of Shame.

Geek Offices Needed A New Website Design. Now We Have One.

Screen Shot 2016-04-27 at 9.54.19 PM

While Geek Offices is one the most affordable coworking sites around Cambridge, our website was vintage 2011 and nearly impossible to read on a phone.  With numerous new coworking spaces coming to Cambridge since Fairlane Properties started Geek Offices in 2010, we needed to up our marketing game. Our Craiglist, Google Adwords and Yelp listings were attracting a lot more people who wanted to work on our website than wanted to use our coworking space.  And the Google Adwords’ Dashboard was telling us that over 50% of our views and clicks were from phones.

We finally decided to spend the time for the redesign when one of our members, Doug Feinburg of Thunder Sky Pictures, provided a proposal and suggested that he would ask our coworking members to be in our photos.  Doug also suggested that providing lunch from All-Star Sandwich Bar in Inman Square would entice members to be around at the exact time of the photoshoot.  We wanted the website to focus on our funky, former shoe manufacturing mill building, our emphasis on private, dedicated workstations and offices (instead of seats at dedicated Ikea tables like some other coworking spaces offer) and our talented members.  www.geekoffices.com has been relaunched.  So check us out and see that a 5 person company can receive 5 dedicated workstations for an average of $215/month per person!

Molasses Flood Readies To Launch

Our mates here at The Molasses Flood have been burning the midnight oil of late and their efforts are about to pay off. Later this week the game-making startup will go public with their first product, The Flame in the Flood. The game has been available via Steam Early Access for PC & Mac users since September. Xbox One will release it on Wednesday.

The Molasses Flood joined us here at Geek Offices a couple of years ago and soon after raised $250,000 on Kickstarter to build “A rogue-lite river journey through the backwaters of a forgotten post-societal America.”

PC Powerplay calls the Flame in the Flood “a haunting, challenging and even a little disturbing world in which to wander.”

Molasses Flood co-founder Forrest Dowling recently spoke at length to Engadget about the Flame in the Flood, game making, and a decision he and his coworkers made to leave bigger, more established shops to strike out on their own.

“It seemed like it was the right time to do this, to take a risk,” he said. “None of us are so old that we couldn’t take a risk, but we also had been doing it long enough that it felt worthwhile to take it on.”
